WhatsApp beta 2.18.216 brings mute feature on Android

Recently, we saw that WhatsApp was developing a "Mark as Read" feature for WhatsApp notifications in Android. The company has also started labeling forwarded messages as a measure to fight misinformation. Other recent feature additions include being able to export account data in compliance with GDPR requirementsswitch from a voice call to a video call in the middle of a callgroup-specific features such as user search and tools to catch up on messages, as well as the ability of administrators to restrict other members of a group from posting messages. Now, WhatsApp beta 2.18.216, submitted on the Google Play Beta Program, brings a new mute shortcut feature on Android.

WABetaInfo stated that WhatsApp was developing a "mute chat" feature, and the feature is now available for all users using WhatsApp beta version 2.18.216. The way it works is simple: if users receive 51+ messages from the same chat, they will find a new button named Mute in the WhatsApp notification in the Android notifications drawer.

It won't appear if the user receives less than 51 messages in a single chat. In this situation, the user will instead have another shortcut in the future, which is named Mark as Read. The Mark as Read shortcut feature in the notifications drawer is already used by Android Messages, and users can it enable it via a third-party app for Gmail notifications. However, it's not available for WhatsApp users yet. WABetaInfo states that WhatsApp is adding new improvements in the next updates for the feature, and it's not available yet for development reasons.

If the Mute feature is not enabled for users, they can backup their chat history and reinstall WhatsApp.
