Help me break my Q90 9 inch Allwinner A23 Dual Core rubbish tablet

Hello all, thanks in advance for your help! I have a problem and am looking for some advice as I have tried everything I can think of.

I own this cruddy generic tablet which somehow became riddled with malware and I recently realised after a factory reset that the malware is actually pre-installed. I'm pretty sure I know what the offending applications are (one of them is even named 'popup' - well cheeky) but I am unable to remove or disable them, including through 3rd party software like AVG and Avast.

I think I need to root it so I can either get rid of the malware or install a custom rom. However all the root applications which I install on the tablet fail; when I get error messages they're usually to the effect that the tablet is not vulnerable to a given exploit. Most of the PC (Windows 10) applications I have installed have failed to recognise the tablet which suggests a problem with drivers.

I have tried these things:
- connected to the device (mass storage mode) and browsed the tablet successfully
- verified that debug mode is enabled
- installed generic google adb drivers
- uninstalled those and other drivers, then installed pda.net, allowed it to install drivers, connected successfully using pda, KingRoot etc still failed to connect.

There is one thing that sort of worked. OneClickRoot failed to connect initially (same as the others) but seemed to connect successfully when I selected the device manually (which I found by plugging in the build #).. However it's not possible to verify because it cost $40 which is probably just throwing good $ after bad and anyway I'm not willing to admit defeat yet!

Here is the spec:
Model #: Q90
9 inch
Allwinner A23 Dual Core
Android 4.2
8GB
Build #: phpq23083121891

Thanks again in advance for your help!
