Encryption unsuccessful

I have a stock Moto x 2014. It boots and comes up with an error that encryption was unsuccessful, and the option to click for a factory reset (which does nothing).

I can enter fastboot, but not recovery (the knocked over android never appears, so I can't do vol up/power combination).

Can anyone help?
