The Reliance JioPhone was launched last year as a "smart feature phone" powered by KaiOS. KaiOS is a fork of Boot2Gecko, which is the community-driven successor to the now extinct Firefox OS. The JioPhone had more capabilities than the average feature phone as it had Wi-Fi, 4G LTE, VoLTE, GPS, and the ability to run limited apps. Last month, Google announced that Google Maps, Assistant, and YouTube would roll out for KaiOS-powered devices such as the JioPhone. Now, the latest software update for the JioPhone brings Google Maps support.
The JioPhone's list of specifications includes the Qualcomm 205 platform, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage (expandable up to 128GB), 2MP rear camera, VGA front camera, and a 2000mAh battery. Previously, Google had made Google Assistant available for JioPhone users. Now, users can use Google Maps by installing the 2018.628.2 software update for the JioPhone. The update can be installed by going to Settings > Device > Software update. It needs the phone's battery to be at a 30 percent charge. After the software has been updated, users can open the Jio Store app and download the Google Maps app that is visible on the home page. Gadgets 360 was able to install the app on the JioPhone.
The publication reported that as the JioPhone has a small 2.4-inch QVGA display, the Google Maps app has a minimal layout (as expected). It also has a smaller file size on KaiOS as compared to the Android and iOS apps. The app options include Search, Show map, Your location, Drive, Two-wheeler, Train or Bus, Walk, Map layers, and About. App navigation was found to be easy as users need to select from the list of suggestions when they enter a location in the status bar. The world map can also be accessed, and map layer functionality is also retained. This includes Traffic to help users know about the traffic conditions in different locations.
Last week, Reliance announced the JioPhone 2 – the successor to the JioPhone. The JioPhone 2 comes with a BlackBerry-style design and a full QWERTY keypad. Its price is also higher at ₹2,999. At the JioPhone 2 event, the company also announced that WhatsApp and YouTube will roll out on the JioPhone soon (Google Maps should also be available on the JioPhone 2 when it launches next month). The KaiOS-powered Nokia 8110 4G will also get these apps, as confirmed by HMD Global.
